Our third destination on our Interail journey was Berlin, Germany. We visited Berlin for 2 days and crammed in as much sightseeing as possible! I loved Berlin and would go back again for a weekend break. In this blog, I’ve summarised our 2 days in Berlin and included a photo diary of the things we got up to.
Getting to Berlin
We travelled from Cologne to Berlin via train which took around 4.5 hours. Most of the cities in Germany are well linked up by the train lines, so travelling by train is one of the best ways to get around if you’re here to see multiple places.
We used Interail passes for our journey as this was the easiest way we could get around Europe in a couple of weeks.
If you’re going for a weekend break, Berlin is easy to get to from most UK airports, and can be fairly cheap depending on flight times. I always check Skyscanner for the best flight prices.
Where to stay in Berlin
There are lots of different areas that you can stay in Berlin, with each area giving you different vibes and accommodation options. As we were arriving into Berlin late at night and we had limited time in the city we wanted to stay somewhere close to the main station, and close to the main sights, so we chose to stay in Mitte.
Travelling on a budget meant we opted to stay in a hostel. At the time it was called Berlin Hostel (original, I know), but since then it seems to have rebranded to St Christopher’s Berlin Mitte. I always use Hostel World for my hostel bookings.
Cost: €24.50 per person per night in a female only 6 person en suite dorm room
Review: I thought this hostel was quite expensive for what the rooms were offering, but this was expected in Western Europe. The staff members here were extremely helpful with recommending things to do and places to go. At the time they were even offering free walking tours but we didn’t get a chance to join in on this. There is a bar/restaurant attached to this hostel that serves great food and drinks at reasonable prices, and we had a pancake breakfast here on our first morning to celebrate my travel buddy’s birthday! The rooms themselves were pretty basic, and luggage storage as well as electricity points was an issue. We also arrived around midnight and struggled to make our beds up in the dark without waking our fellow hostel go-ers, so that wasn’t the best start to our time in Berlin.
Things to do in Berlin
Berlin is huge and it’s definitely not short of things to do. It is full of historical landmarks and museums and if you wanted to do everything here you could easily spend 5 days exploring. Some of the things we got up to included:
